In Laravel, “multi-authentication” (also known as “multi-guard authentication”) refers to the ability to manage multiple user authentication systems in a single application. This is useful when you have different types of users, such as regular users and administrators, each with their own authentication requirements and user models.

To implement multi-authentication in Laravel, you’ll typically follow these steps:

Step 1: Create Multiple User Models:

Create separate user models for each type of user you want to authenticate. For example, you might have a User model for regular users and an Admin model for administrators. You can use the artisan command to generate these models:

php artisan make:model User
php artisan make:model Admin

Step 2: Configure Authentication Guards:

In the config/auth.php file, define multiple guards, each associated with a user model. Laravel allows you to configure different authentication drivers for each guard. For example, you can use the "web" guard for regular users with session-based authentication and the "admin" guard for administrators with session-based or token-based authentication.

Here’s a simplified example of a config/auth.php file:

Step 3: Define Authentication Providers:

Configure authentication providers for each user model. Providers determine where Laravel should retrieve user records. In the same config/auth.php file, define providers for "users" and "admins" that specify the corresponding Eloquent models:

Step 4: Implement Authentication Logic:

In your application, implement authentication logic based on the selected guard. You can use the auth() helper method to access the desired guard:

// User is logged in
}

// Authenticate an administrator
if (auth()->guard('admin')->attempt(['email' => $email, 'password' => $password])) {
// Admin is logged in
}

Step 5: Protect Routes:

Use middleware to protect routes based on the selected guard. For example, you can apply the “auth:web” middleware to protect routes for regular users and the “auth:admin” middleware to protect routes for administrators:

// Routes accessible to regular users
});

Route::middleware(['auth:admin'])->group(function () {
// Routes accessible to administrators
});

Step 6: Logout:

To log users out, you can use the logout method on the appropriate guard:

auth()->guard('web')->logout(); // Log out a regular user
auth()->guard('admin')->logout(); // Log out an administrator
